Reality Always Holds True

More than four years after his solo presentation Huiselijkheid, Rik Hagt returns to Galerie Noord with intimate interiors and still lifes. He portrays, in turn, his home, studio, a hotel room or a temporary dwelling occupied for the duration of a renovation.

Hagt considers his daily surroundings his most important source of inspiration. In his oil paintings, watercolours and pencil drawings, he colours them according to his own taste and mood. Some works appear hermetic and painstakingly elaborated, while others retain the spontaneous looseness of a sketch. Both approaches can exist side by side. Attributes are omitted, emphasised or partially cut off. His ongoing challenge is to do justice to the complexity of reality while at the same time arriving at a clear and balanced image.

When a work threatens to come to a standstill, it is often sufficient for Hagt to return to direct observation. In the real world, everything has its own self-evident place and colour. Reality always holds true.

Rik Hagt (Heerenveen, 1962) studied at Minerva Art Academy in Groningen and has exhibited regularly in the Netherlands and abroad since the 1990s. His work has in recent years been shown at, among others, Galerie Noord, SIGN, Y2, Projectruimte BMB, Art Singel 100 and Debsaysyes. He received several grants from the Fonds voor Beeldende Kunsten and his work is represented in various collections. He has also been involved in several artists’ initiatives and residencies.

Galerie Noord.

Galerie Noord is een expositieruimte in hartje Groningen. Vierwekelijks bieden we kunstenaars uit het Noorden de mogelijkheid recent werk te tonen, solo of in kleine groepen. Galerie Noord richt zich op autonoom, experimenteel en onderzoekend werk in vrijwel alle disciplines. We willen bezoekers verrassen door tentoonstellingen te bieden met een wisselend karakter. 
 
Galerie Noord wordt volledig gerund door vrijwilligers. In 1997 werd de galerie opgericht als kunstenaarsinitiatief.
