Since the end of November, four artists have joined the LABitat trajectory: Aisha Hachem, Ra’fat Ali, An Ye Zhi de Jong, and Jurjen Galema. The upcoming months they will work at NP3 | RE:Search:Gallery, experimenting and creating new works. They regularly show their process in Open LABitats, the first one will be on December 17th.

Jurjen Galema is an artist based in Groningen. He creates soft sculptures, building colorful worlds inhabited by eccentric figures with intriguing stories and interactive elements. Gender, identity, kitsch, popular culture and obsessions are themes he explores and interprets in his own way. For his LABitat period, Jurjen chose to work and experiment in the DISplay, the window exhibition space of NP3 | RE:Search:Gallery, where his process will be 24/7 visible from the outside. For the upcoming months he moved his studio so you can see him work regularly on new creations and upcoming projects.

Where his work radiates softness, Jurjen addresses also more abrasive themes—though still in a gentle way. Recently Jurjen started researching alternative methods of presentation: from creating a nightclub around his installation to exhibiting in public space, he transforms his installations into an ultimate experience that stays with people and appeals to all the senses.

LABitat is NP3’s development programme that aims at fostering artistic research and experimentation. The name LABitat merges “LAB” (laboratory) and “habitat” (living environment), reflecting what NP3 offers: an environment where artists can experiment, research and present, to develop their practice in a supportive artistic environment.

NP3 is een tentoonstellings- en onderzoeksruimte voor hedendaagse experimenterende kunst. Zij beschikt over drie unieke locaties in de stad van Groningen met ieder een eigen architectuur, functie en uitstraling: RE:Search:Gallery aan de Hofstraat 21, de containerkunsthal MOBi aan de Suikerlaan 41 en eMMa het 24/7/365 interactieve programma in de Videobusstop van Rem Koolhaas op het Emmaplein.
