Ode and Intersection
Jolanda Warners lives and works in the city of Groningen. Driven by a long-held desire to become an artist, she began the foundation course at the Klassieke Academie in 2020. Spurred on by her undiminished enthusiasm, she subsequently decided to enrol in the specialist and master’s programmes, the first steps towards becoming a visual artist. She is due to complete this course in mid-2026. Jolanda’s work is predominantly expressive, conceptual and intuitive in nature.
The theme for this exhibition is ‘Ode and Intersection’. Through this combined theme, Jolanda wishes to pay tribute to her mother and aunt. They lived in the Jewish quarter of Groningen and regularly attended the synagogue on Folkingestraat until, during the Second World War, they were placed with a foster family in the west of the province of Groningen.
From this point of connection, she translates her experiences into paintings that relate to the family in which she was raised and her mother’s wartime past, but which also allude to the abstract reality of contemporary wars. Through this, she aims to subtly share activist messages with the viewer to raise awareness.
Jolanda’s work has previously been exhibited at various venues, such as Master-Mix at the Sociëteit de Harmonie in Groningen, ex-Positie in the church of Eppenhuizen, De Hoeksteen in Noordlaren, and at Kerst Kameroen/Noorderpoort College, where her work was auctioned for charity.
