Monnikenwerk 2025
About this activity.
From August 18th to 23rd, with August 24th as the closing Sunday, the eighth edition of the Monnikenwerk project will take place. This year, we will be working in a small group of six churches, with six artists, for six consecutive days. We will return to the four churches where we began—Den Andel, Saaxumhuizen, Eenrum, and Westernieland—plus Winsum Obergum and Tinallinge.
MONNIKENWERK: In the austere space of a medieval church, artists will work in silence on their monastic work: art created with time and attention in a space that has held significance for centuries. Art that invites visitors to attentively observe and reflect.
Marc de Groot will be working in the church of Winsum-Obergum, where he will carve a text by Nick Cave into stone. A text that he finds comforting. Wouter Wieringa will be staying in the church of Den Andel with the question, "Where can I hide?" A tent of canvas, words, threads, white on white. Anjet van Linge brings a tree stump into the church of Eenrum, once struck by lightning. A tree of evil and good? The church in Westernieland is where Lisette Durenkamp embarks on her journey with flax. In this crop, everything comes together. "What is my place in all of this?" Leen Kaldenberg is in the church of Saaxumhuizen, listening, watching, letting herself be guided by letting go, and what then emerges. In the church of Tinallinge, Jolanda Tuma makes a pilgrimage in the silence of the church, inspired by the words of Dag Hammarskjöld: "The longest journey is the journey within."
There will be chopping, painting, shoveling, writing, embroidery, and meditation.
Visitors are welcome that week on Wednesday, August 20th, Thursday, August 21st, and Friday, August 22nd, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. to experience the church and its art.
