Minne Onnes - Painter of the Wadden Sea
About this activity.
Thursday to Sunday - 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Minne Onnes was born on November 6, 1935, in Oostmahorn. He is the son of Klaas Onnes - marine painter and captain of the ferry known mainly in North-East Friesland and particularly on Schiermonnikoog.
From a young age, paint, brush, and canvas were familiar tools for Minne Onnes.
To be a painter was always a dream, but earning a living is something else... At the age of sixteen, Minne Onnes became a sailor. After that, he had various jobs. He ultimately decided to study art, at the age of 49. He studied at the Academy Minerva in Groningen. Immediately after his time at the academy (1984 – 1989), he had succes as a painter.
Like his father, Minne Onnes is inspired by the sea. The strength of his work lies in the more abstract pieces, in which he releases the literal seascape and brings the elements of nature to the forefront, on large canvases.
Minne says about his work: "My approach is an impressionistic representation of the Wadden Sea, in which I try to express my feelings about society and my surroundings with the hope that viewers can find something of themselves in it."
