Whilst the work of the Groningen art group De Ploeg was still widely despised at the start of the twentieth century, house painter and frame maker Sibbele Ongering (1882–1954) offered them the space to exhibit their art in his shop. This gave rise to a special collaboration and friendship between the artists of De Ploeg and the Ongering family.

The painter Jan Altink (1885–1971) in particular was often to be found in the shop or at the Ongering family’s home. To Sibbele’s children, Jan Altink was simply ‘Uncle Jan’. They were allowed to accompany him when he went out to paint and became interested in his work. Through Altink, the Ongering family came into contact with other artists. Several family members bought art or were given paintings as gifts in exchange for framing them, thereby building up a collection.

The frame-making business has been passed down through the generations. The fourth generation is currently at the helm. Although the business has moved and been refurbished several times, space has always been set aside for exhibiting work by various artists.

The role of the Ongering family in the history of De Ploeg has remained under-examined. Authors Doeke Sijens (Hantum, 1955) and Jannes de Vries (Midwolde, 1954) researched this remarkable family history. Their findings can be read in the book 'Expeditie Ongering: Leven met De Ploeg'. The exhibition tells this story through works of art from the Ongering family’s collection.
