Martin Tissing (1936-2018) was one of the most important and influential modern artists of the Northern Netherlands. He was the last of the generation of young artists who rebelled against De Ploeg in the 1950s and 1960s and strove for a new art in Groningen. He developed his characteristic style in the course of the eighties, under the influence of young Italians such as Mimmo Paladino and Nicola de Maria.
Martin Tissing's paintings and watercolors are characterized by a delicate use of color and a poetic atmosphere, in which he tried, in his own words, to achieve 'solidified silence'. The contemplative character is reinforced by references to the stars, the cosmos and elements from Buddhism. With this he made 'poetic art in an unpoetic time', which appealed to a wide audience.
As a homage to Martin Tissing, the Kunstlievend Genootschap Pictura will be showing an extensive selection from his artistic legacy from 14 May to 25 June in a sales exhibition, from youthful works from the early 1960s to his last paintings six decades later. Tissing worked and exhibited at home and abroad, but always felt connected to his hometown of Groningen.
Martin Tissing has not only made art throughout his life, but also collected art. He did not proceed according to a preconceived plan, but was guided by what came his way. His collection reflected his life and shows the people who, artistically or personally, have played a role in his life. Pictura also shows a small selection from this collection, with work by Job Hansen, Jan Jordens, Fie Werkman, Drewes de Wit and Tjibbe Hooghiemstra, among others.

Het Kunstlievend Genootschap Pictura in Groningen werd opgericht in 1832 met als doel: 'de beeldende kunst en de nijverheidskunst in de ruimste zin van het woord aan te moedigen en te bevorderen.' Pictura is gehuisvest in een mooi, monumentaal pand aan het Martinikerkhof in Groningen. In de sfeervolle zalen exposeren professionele kunstenaars van uiteenlopende richtingen en disciplines, maar de hoofdmoot is figuratief.
