About this activity.
Marcel Duran for the 19th time in the Kloosterkerk, Thesinge
From March 28 to April 12, Marcel Duran will be exhibiting recent work in the 13th-century Kloosterkerk in Thesinge.
For Marcel Duran, painting all kinds of subjects from his immediate surroundings is always interesting and challenging. From the intimacy of a woman reading the morning newspaper in an interior to a view of rice fields on Java reflecting the cloudy sky.
City, country, and sea are recurring themes in his work. Duran often paints in the city center of Groningen, reflected by the canals, the lively market, and the park. He alternates this with trips to other cities, but also to the coast and beaches where he finds his motifs.
In recent years, Duran has often traveled to France, where he has produced many works depicting pastoral landscapes, painted in bright colors with a subtle representation of light and space.
With precise strokes, Duran captures what moves him in oil paint. “It is always the everyday moments that strike a chord and inspire me to capture and reproduce them. It is the pleasure of exploring and capturing that first impression, that which has moved you, that matters. Time and time again, throughout your life, and each time with ‘new’ eyes.”
Duran is also known for his portraits, painted with character and flair, often on commission. For example, he has painted a considerable number of portraits of professors for the University of Groningen.
In addition to paintings, he creates sculptures in clay or wax. A number of these are cast in bronze and can be seen at the exhibition. Just as brushstrokes bring his paintings to life, he achieves the same effect with his sculptures. The direct touch of his hands is palpable.
Marcel Duran's works are on display in the monastery church in Thesinge from March 28 to April 12.
