Mail Art Wave 2022 by Adam Roussopoulos

Raamgalerie De Prachtvink
1 September 2025 to 30 September 2025

About this activity.

From September 1st to 30th, 2025, Minnesota-based artist Adam Roussopoulos will exhibit the artistamp "Mail Art Wave 2022" at the window gallery "De Prachtvink" in the Vinkhuizen shopping center, Platinalaan 505a, 9743 GZ Groningen.

Mail Art Wave 2022 is an artistamp from 2022. The stamp measures 7 x 5 cm. The image is based on Hokusai's famous Great Wave from 1830. Roussopoulos has added elements: the red rising sun of the old Japanese flag, a raft with a mermaid on it, and a typical American mailbox on a pole. The artist has painted the background yellow. The symbolism is quite clear: the artist combines mail art, expressed through the mailbox, with a wave. The mermaid on the raft makes it clear that the intended wave isn't as great as it appears. Mail art was, and increasingly is, a narrow niche in the art world.

Mail art is a dying art form. Artists from all over the world send each other envelopes with collages, drawings, and graphics, the true purpose of which is unclear and where aesthetics plays a secondary role. A special form of mail art is the artistamp: artistic postage stamps. Originally, the idea was to affix homemade stamps to a piece of mail to determine the extent of the postage due. Since mail sorting has become automated, the artistamp has become primarily a unique artistic expression. Postage has now become so expensive that mail art has become a costly affair.

Adam Roussopoulos is an artist from Minnesota, United States. He trained in graphic design and has dedicated himself in recent years to creating art stamps. His book, "A Brief History of Something," provides an overview of his extensive production from 2019 to 2021. Roussopoulos is a popular mail art contributor due to the high quality of his artistamps. In addition to artistamp art, he also works with rubber stamp art. His most recent project is "Rubber Portraits of Currently Active Mail Artists." Adam creates a rubber stamp from a submitted passport photo and incorporates it into mail art contributions.

The Window Gallery is an exhibition space that can only be viewed from the outside, but it is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The gallery is illuminated until 11:00 PM.

Each month, a new artwork by a different artist is exhibited.
