Keep on dreaming

De Lawei
28 January 2023 to 26 March 2023

About this activity.

SAT 28 JAN - SUN 26 MAR 2023

Keep on Dreaming is the title of the new exhibition in De Lawei in Drachten on the theme of dreams. Central is an interactive installation by textile designer and theater maker Mariken Biegman. The theme is further elaborated by other artists, including photographer Ronald Pras and painter Elise Klinkert. Other northern artists are also participating; Erik de Boer, Sjoerd Kooistra of Studio A heart that works, Marjan Geboers, Reny Kramer, Fleur Stoltenborgh, Marijke Sjollema, Maruschka Poolman, Myrte Legerstee, Jenny Piso and Hilde van Eijk.

Droomdeken - Mariken Biegman
The exhibition is built around the installation by Mariken Biegman. It is a huge bed on which lies a woolen 'dream blanket' of crocheted flowers, on which Biegman, volunteers and visitors will continue to work during the exhibition. According to Milena Bleeksma, visual arts coordinator at Theater De Lawei, Biegman dreams of connecting people. ‘One way to do that is to have volunteers and visitors make something together. Crocheting together on a dream blanket of flowers is a nice way to let people meet.'

"Imagine being able to make a huge dream blanket of crocheted floral motifs with many different people! All the people who participate can choose the colors, shapes and sizes of the flowers themselves. So much diversity combined into a large whole "Isn't that wonderful?"

To make her dream of connection even more concrete, Biegman will travel through Drachten with a 'musing bench'. The intention is for Drachten residents to sit on the bench and share their dreams. At the exhibition, visitors can listen to a soundscape of these stories. The bench is a collaboration between Mariken Biegman and Kika Booy and was designed by artist Marc van Vliet, known for Sense of Place.

Dreamscapes - Ronald Pras
Photographer Ronald Pras presents his Dreamscapes, mysterious landscape photos that tell an atmospheric story and invite you to take a closer look. In photography he feels completely free. Free to look, free to print, free to choose the frames for my images. He hopes that people will feel included in his way of looking. Through photo editing, he reinforces the atmosphere he feels with the image afterwards. He is always looking for a kind of alienation, which turns landscapes into dreamscapes. He uses the techniques that photographers used to use in the darkroom: 'some parts you make a little darker, others you light out. So minimal interventions and only to enhance the atmosphere of the photographed moment.'

"I always want to convey a certain atmosphere with my photos. When something strikes me in a landscape, for example a tree with an exuberant above-ground root system, it is as if I step into a fantasy world. I see all kinds of crazy creatures in those roots that working together. I want to photograph and display that in such a way that someone else is also completely taken into that somewhat unreal world. That's why I call my photos dreamscapes."

Since we all came from the same place - Elise Klinkert
Visual artist Elise Klinkert shows recent paintings from the series Since we all came from the same place. A recurring theme in her work is the romantic desire for a better and more beautiful world. A world in which people, animals and nature are in a kind of peaceful connection with each other.
