Katja Heitmann - Motus Mori: PERPETUUM
About this activity.
From Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 October, Grand Theatre presents PERPETUUM, the internationally acclaimed video artwork by choreographer Katja Heitmann. For the installation, residents of the city and province of Groningen donated their movements to Heitmann’s ‘movement archive’, Motus Mori. PERPETUUM brings images from this archive together in an immersive video installation, now on a monumental scale.
PERPETUUM
Katja Heitmann is fascinated by humanity’s ongoing attempt to make itself immortal. Since 2019, she has been collecting personal movements to preserve them for the future. More than 2,500 people have now donated their movement to the Motus Mori archive, which forms the basis for a series of artworks by Heitmann. PERPETUUM is the latest.
In PERPETUUM, a changing succession of people from the archive appears on a monumental scale. Each of them shares their own most characteristic movement with the audience. Step closer and you come face to face with them and hear the stories behind those movements. In a sea of light, each visitor’s own movement becomes visible too. The stories can be heard in Dutch, English, German or French, but the installation can be fully experienced without knowing any of these languages.
Theaterkrant previously wrote about Motus Mori: “Heitmann is on a mission! Undeniably. In Motus Mori she gives the body back to a society that is in danger of losing sight of its value. Art cannot be more urgent than this.”
ABOUT KATJA HEITMANN
In her visual-choreographic work, Katja Heitmann explores what moves humanity in the present age. Her minimalist, meticulously crafted visual language stands in stark contrast to human fallibility. Through her performance installations and theatrical exhibitions, she actively seeks interaction with the city and the people who live there, reaching a remarkably diverse audience as a result. In 2016 Heitmann received the Dutch Dance Festival Award, followed in 2020 by the Gieskes-Strijbis Podiumprijs.
