Karin Iturralde / Umbilical Planes

About this activity.

How do roads guide us, and how do they close us off? Which lives and stories do they enable, and which are eliminated? Fifty years after Groningen-born artist Bas Jan Ader vanished at sea, ARTisBOOK presents Umbilical Planes by Karin Iturralde Nurnberg: website situated in the cabin of an airplane. The work expands on the project 11 Hours of Clouds, parts of which were on show at ARTisBOOK in February 2025. In this compilation of associative and fragmented stories and essays presented as a website, installation and an accompanying performance, Iturralde Nurnberg explores the queer phenomenology of the liminal spaces of travel and being underway. 

This year marks fifty years since the disappearance of the artist Bas Jan Ader (1942–1975), originally from Groningen, who vanished in the Atlantic Ocean during a solo sailing journey. To commemorate this, Academy Minerva, ARTisBOOK, Block C, Pictura and SIGN have joined forces to pay tribute to Bas Jan Ader and his work, inspired by two central themes in his oeuvre: falling and failure.

Stichting ARTisBOOK.

Stichting ARTisBOOK is een onderzoeks- en presentatieruimte voor hedendaagse kunstenaarsboeken en haar makers. In samenwerking met de kunstenaars creëren we programma’s waarin gastvrijheid, collectiviteit, experimenteren en kennisuitwisseling centraal staan. We dagen de kunstenaar uit ‘te spelen met ideeën over het kunstenaarsboek’ en nieuwe relaties te onderzoeken tussen hun werk en het publiek.

Door onze samenwerking met andere ruimtes en organisaties ontstaan er kruisbestuivingen en nieuwe mogelijkheden om ons programma met een breed publiek te ontwikkelen en te onderzoeken. Als kenniscentrum voorzien we studenten en kunstenaars van advies, ons archief is publiekelijk toegankelijk en er worden gesprekken en gastlessen met de exposerende kunstenaars georganiseerd.
