JAN VAN DER PLOEG: BOTH SIDES
About this activity.
OFF HOOK is pleased to present the solo exhibition BOTH SIDES by Jan van der Ploeg from 8 March – 3 May 2024.
You are most welcome to attend the opening on Friday, March 8, at 5 p.m. The artist is present.
The Amsterdam-based artist is a leading representative of contemporary geometric abstraction in the Netherlands. Van der Ploeg works at the interface of minimalist painting and architectural intervention to reinterpret the legacy of the artists and architects associated with the Dutch De Stijl (1917 – 1931). In his large-scale site responsive wall paintings and paintings on canvas, the artist energetically extends these iconic earlier experiments.
The artist's practice is based on the idea that, at its origins, painting comprises a relatively limited language – one of form, colour, historical precedent – and that by obeying certain rules, complex intuitions can be expressed, and a distinctive order created. Van der Ploeg's hard edged and geometrically bold works blend a very distinctive and personal vocabulary which is recognizable in its detail, precision, and balance.
No doubt, this aesthetic language of the 'effortless equilibrium' provides a somewhat familiar playground which expands to the sympathetic resonance the wall-paintings create with their temporary locale. But in fact, the artist's mastery comes from a lifetime exploring the languages of architectural-nuance, site-specific abstraction, geometry, color and perception: the syntax of De Stijl which is catapulted into our contemporary world.
Van der Ploeg has produced many hundreds of wall paintings in various international locations including museums, galleries, corporate, public, and private spaces exploring the legacies of this vernacular. (text: Pamela Hansford)
For the exhibition BOTH SIDES in OFF HOOK Jan van der Ploeg has designed two site specific wall paintings which will be presented alongside work on canvas.
