Jan Roos

Kunsthandel Peter ter Braak
1 March 2026 to 29 March 2026

About this activity.

Coinciding with the major Jan Roos exhibition at the Belvédère Museum, Kunsthandel Peter ter Braak is organizing a sales exhibition of his work.

Jan Roos is one of the most important painters in the Northern Netherlands. Born in Harlingen in 1951, he studied at the Vredeman de Vries Academy in Leeuwarden and subsequently at the Jan van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. During his time at the academy, he found inspiration in the work of a new generation of German painters, Die Neue Wilden (The New Wild Ones). Returning to Harlingen in the early 1980s, he developed his own neo-expressionist idiom, but unlike the German painters, Roos avoided current themes and any form of activism to do what few were doing: painting from observation in the open air. He found his themes in Harlingen's harbor areas—the shipyard near his house, and when it was relocated to the industrial harbor further afield, the fish auctions, the floating docks, the breakwaters, and the jetties. To work quickly on-site, Jan Roos swapped oil paint and canvas for acrylic paint and ship's wrapping paper he found in the harbor. With the large sheets of paper on the floor, he paints what he sees, crouched or kneeling. His approach is characterized by observation, wonder, and immersion in the moment through painting. And this involves not only seeing, but also smelling, hearing, and feeling—the sensory sensations in which everything is interconnected.
