From 1 to 30 June 2025, HilgArt, artist from West Virginia, will exhibit a mail art collage ‘Imagine Piece Against Breast Cancer’ in the window gallery ‘De Prachtvink’ at the Vinkhuizen shopping centre, Platinalaan 505a, 9743 GZ Groningen.
‘Imagine Piece Against Breast Cancer’ is a composite mail art artwork measuring 21.5 x 28 cm. The artist has worked on a sheet of paper with a grid of mainly blue blocks with red accents with felt-tip pen, creating a contour of a human head. HilgArt has glued a lancet-shaped clipping into the head. The clipping is a cut-out from an Italian magazine with a primitive image of a woman on it. The edge of the image is written in rough letters: ‘Against Breast Cancer’. Subtle elements in the work are the address block of the Italian mail art artist Moreno Menarin and a piece of white-red tape. The letters ‘Imagine Piece’ are stamped on the back as a hint on how to read the work. The faceless head represents modern man. Technology has already brought mankind a lot and provided solutions to problems that caused enormous misery in the past. But not everything has a solution yet: breast cancer is still the most common type of cancer among women. 670,000 women die from this form of cancer each year. With a population of almost 8 billion, that seems like a solvable problem and perhaps if that succeeds, another problem can be tackled: imagine peace….
HilgArt is the artist name of Thomas Hilgartner (born 1961), an artist from West Virginia, originally active in Charleston and in recent years in Scott Depot. He has been involved in mail art since the nineties. A special project is his ‘Dada dollars’, blank bills with the designation ‘Dada dollar’, the nominal value, such as 4 dollars, and the invitation to fellow mail art artists to decorate the banknote. HilgArt participates in calls from all over the world and focuses mainly on pass-on art, in which he challenges artists to add something to a work of art and pass it on.
The window gallery is an exhibition space that can only be viewed from the outside, but then 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The gallery is lit up until 23:00.
