Home and Skin (Huis en huid)

Y2 Damsterdiep
8 September 2023 to 17 September 2023

About this activity.

Three painters, born in consecutive decades, present their work under the title Home and Skin in Y2 at Damsterdiep 299 in Groningen. They are united in their love for the most intimate and closeby, which, by painting it, is lifted above itself. Besides the three painters having their distinctive palettes, the representations are abstracted to varied degrees.

Anika Mariam Ahmed (1988) paints with a sure hand both domestic scenes and, what you could call, natural phenomena. She captures moments: a rain shower, or the sun throwing shadows on an armchair. Her paintings are small everyday sensations. When you see them as a viewer, you are overwhelmed by the thought, "Yes, that's exactly it!"

The small canvases of Anh Tam Le (1972) only vaguely evoke memories of the seen reality. Nevertheless, for the well-informed, elements from the artist's daily environment can be recognized: a bouquet of flowers, a green drawing folder, the hedge of the neighbours. The often thick paint skin implies that long has been searched for the right colors and the ordering of the different color fields.

Rik Hagt (1962) considers the thoughtful layers upon layers painting in oil as a way of contemplation. While painting, he comes to an exact formulation of what he wanted to say. His scenes, for instance a glimpse of his studio seen through the doorway, are frozen memories of situations from the past and the present.

Home and Skin opens on Friday 8 September (5-7pm) in the presence of the artists. A finissage will take place on Sunday 17 September (3-5pm). In between, the exhibition can be visited on five more afternoons (Saturday 9-9, Sunday 10-9, Tuesday 12-9, Thursday 14-9 and Friday 15-9) always from 2-5pm. On each afternoon, one of the artists will be present for an explanation. All works on display are for sale.
