Hendrik de Vries exhibition

Kunstpunt Groningen
8 December 2023 to 11 January 2024

About this activity.

Last year, Katayoon Valamanesh and Maartje Terpstra were the recipients of the Hendrik de Vries Stipendium, an encouragement award for young artists. Now, a year later, they showcase what they have created with the stipendium in the Hendrik de Vries exhibition.

Katayoon Valamanesh, winner in the visual arts category, presents her long-awaited project 'The Garden of Eden.' This video installation focuses on the complexity of the theme of immigration.

Maartje Terpstra takes you into her work 'Omgekeerd geannoteerd (Reverse Annotated),' a quest into the (dis)empowerment of the writer and the various forms in which language creates or breaks connections. Terpstra celebrates the ambiguity and fluidity of the creator by experimenting with style. Her spatial installation includes a whimsical manifestation of word and image, illustrations by Reynaert Vosveld, and photos by Ron Marien Tomas Veldman. The accompanying book 'Reverse Annotated' can be admired in the exhibition and is available for purchase at Uitgeverij Passage.

You can experience the Hendrik de Vries exhibition from December 8th to January 11th at Kunstpunt.
Note: Kunstpunt is closed during the Christmas vacation from December 27th to December 30th.

About Katayoon Valamanesh
Interdisciplinary artist Katayoon Valamanesh (1990) came to Groningen from her home country Iran in 2020 and graduated in 2022 from the Frank Mohr Institute. She works with various media and materials, often exploring one central theme: the life of immigrants.

About Maartje Terpstra
Maartje Terpstra (1995) is a writer, artist, researcher, and (eco-)activist. She completed her Master's in Art, Cognition, and Critique at the University of Groningen in 2020. She writes poems, essays, and reviews, with her notable work being the poem 'Container,' described by herself as 'a layered situation sketch about the MSC Zoe disaster with references to (eco)philosophers, climate crises, anthropocentrism, speciesism, and the destructive/creative power of language.'

Hendrik de Vries Stipendium
In 1986, as a tribute to the poet and painter Hendrik de Vries (1896-1989), the municipality of Groningen established the Hendrik de Vries Stipendium. The stipendium was an encouragement award for professional, young artists, intended to stimulate their artistic development. Last year marked the final presentation of the Hendrik de Vries Stipendium, as it has been replaced by new stipends this year.
