STUDIO REPORT FROM ARNHEM

There's no pencil in his studio. Hans paints, or at least he thinks so. But is he?

He does indeed use paint, but usually not directly on the canvas. He often postpones this decision by first applying the paint to a sheet of glass. Then he applies it to the canvas and, if necessary, peels it off again, adding more and working until the image no longer requires further intervention.

Another method that doesn't even involve a brush is creating acrylic foam, a beautiful structure of air/nothingness and acrylic.

Whether it's abstract or figurative, Hans calls himself a material realist: a brushstroke remains a brushstroke, and foam remains foam. Accessible to anyone who can look at the clouds and appreciates light and structure, and doesn't panic if there's no face to be seen in them.

At the initiative of OFF HOOK, a new screen print by Hans Walraven will be presented. It will be printed by Hans and Lydia Wierenga at Zeefdruk Atelier Hogeland in Warffum. It's in A4 format and the edition is limited to 30 prints.

OFF HOOK is an artist run space for contemporary art and exhibitions. It’s located at the corner of a former chemistry laboratory in Groningen, the Netherlands.

OFF HOOK is founded by Dutch artist Lydia Wierenga, with the goal to invite artists to “do what they want”.

OFF HOOK will also present screen-prints in limited editions and “a little something on the side”.

Opening hours: every Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment.
