Hans Waanders (1951-2001) - 20 years in mind

ARTisBOOK
7 October 2021 to 30 October 2021

About this activity.

As a tribute to Hans Waanders, the ARTisBOOK Foundation will hold an archive presentation of his artist's books and ephemera from October 1 to October 30, 2021.

The book is an artistic medium and is used by artists - transformed, hybridized, (de)constructed - for their ideas and experiments. Every concrete or conceptual aspect of the book can be taken as a starting point for artistic action. In this way, worlds of curiosity and research are once again expressed in the artist's book. The world of nature is one of them.

Waanders has studied the kingfisher for 20 years. To find out everything about the shy and solitary kingfisher, he consulted all possible sources in the world. Every detail, such as its sound, whereabouts, name and form has been optimally worked out. In his work we see the kingfisher on various media. His favorite medium was stamping technique. He cut the stamps himself from eraser. The self-produced artist's book was an important medium for Waanders to show his work. They are carefully handcrafted books, often bound in a handy format.

Waanders attended the art academy Minerva Groningen from 1972-1977. His work fits within a trend of a close relationship between the artwork and the collection. These 'artists-collectors' make presentations consisting of everyday objects that are arranged and archived in their own way; the objects are taken out of context and placed in a new system with a different hierarchy. Books by 'artists-collectors' Martin Brandsma, Sibylle Eimermacher, Chohreh Feyzdjou, Hamish Fulton, Anne Geene, Sol Lewitt, Richard Long, Mark Manders, Vibeke Mascini, Chantal Rens, Roland Sips, Hans de Vries and herman de vries are in relationship with the work of Waanders on display.

An extensive online catalog has been published on our website.

Stichting ARTisBOOK.
