Groningen in 3D - The city in stereo photographs 1868-1940
About this activity.
The Groningen Archives cherish a unique collection of stereo photographs of the city of Groningen, featuring the work of various photographers from the period 1868-1940. A selection of over sixty stereo photographs can now be viewed in anaglyph. Are they photographs? Are they art? It is, above all, fascinating. With special 3D glasses, you stand face to face with residents of Groningen from over 100 years ago. You can't get any closer to the past. With the exhibition and the accompanying book, "Groningen in 3D," the city of 1868-1940 can be experienced in 3D for the first time by the public. The exhibition, designed by the creative project agency 212Fahrenheit from Groningen, can be seen from June 23rd to October 21st at the Noordelijk Scheepvaartmuseum (Northern Maritime Museum).
The City of the Past
Much has changed in the city, and many things have remained the same; see for yourself. A carousel is being erected on the Grote Markt, and caravans are being moved to their locations. A vendor selling ice cream and waffles pushes his cart across the north side of the Grote Markt. It's a carnival in town! But also notice the everyday things: the paving stones, signs, a handcart, a bicycle, and a top hat. Swans are being fed in the Noorderplantsoen. From Oosterstraat, you have a wonderful view of the Martini Tower. A heavily laden ship passes the Oosterhaven on its way to the Schuitendiep canal. There's a lot of construction going on; Hereplein Square is being paved—you can almost smell it. The steam is rising! They're also busy paving in Zwanestraat. Laundry hangs thickly to dry along Noorderbinnensingel. Two girls look curiously at the photographer. Welcome to Groningen. Experience the city of over 100 years ago, virtual reality from 1868 to 1940.
