GRASLAND Ezinge: Peng Zhang

Grasland, Ezinge
1 September 2023 to 30 September 2023

About this activity.

GRASLAND, Peng Zhang
Grasland, Ezinge is a collaborative project of SIGN and Koos Buist. In 2023-2024, four artists (including 1 duo) will work on the Grassland in succession. The artists are Peng Zhang, the duo Suzanne Bernard & Phillip Kollman, Wim Warrink, Trudy Oosterhuis. Everyone will work from their own perspective in their own residency/working period.
The first resident is PENG ZHANG, who has a working period from 1 to 30 September 2023.

Grassland, Ezinge = 1 meadow, 1 hectare, a small piece of Europe's oldest cultural landscape.
The artists will (each in their own work and residency period between 2023 and 2024) artistically cultivate Grassland, establishing relationships with the land and that environment. A long-term and sustainable project where education, art, nature, archaeology, ecology and philosophy play a role and come together.
Rural interventions can play a role, imaginative interventions in changing small ecosystems can take place. One or more public moments may be organized during or at the end of the residency period to present findings and/or results to villagers and other visitors.

About the artist:
Peng Zhang was born in Pingxiang, Jiangxi Province, China, Jan 08. 1990. He lives and works in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and was a resident at the Rijksacademie from 2021-2023.
About his work he says:
‘Memories of rural life in my village are at the center of my work. I am interested in themes such as closeness and togetherness, but also in simplicity and slowness, which are mainly related to farmland and nature in my village.
I dive into my past and try to capture moments that I experienced from a young age. The images refer to my memories of the village of Shijian Cun, where I grew up as a child in rural southern China.
My work is characterized by earthy tones that reflect this landscape. During the making process I bring my base to the land and work as a farmer by bending over or kneeling on the land or collaborating with other people and livestock as a way of producing. My materials stem from the land and nature and my techniques stem from rural life, which can essentially be seen as a reflection of a farmer's relationship to his land and nature.
With my work I not only give an insight into my personal background, but also shift the focus to the present moment where a lack of knowledge and experience about life in the countryside is increasing and to stimulate people's interest in the reality of the countryside to generate”
