About this activity.

'For me the landscape is a metaphor of my life'

I am a self-taught painter. Landscapes are the common thread in my work. I primarily use oil paints but also explore a myriad of different materials, tar for exampleI work this with a burner on the panel. For me, the landscape is a metaphor of my life and speaks a language that I cannot express in words. The interesting thing about my work is the process and my challenge is to create something from chaos within that process. A chaos that I know well: it is my best and at the same time worst quality. In this I confront myself. I like to work on panels of large or very small sizes. I find this switch from large to small and from small to large exciting. This is how I create inner landscapes or “mindscapes” as an art critic once called them: they come from within and only exist in my mind. In fact, I continue working on a panel until a landscape is created where I feel at home. Many years of study, experimentation and hard work led to this development in my work. It is work that I fully support and that I would like to show to the world."

Angeniet Bulthuis

“I like to take pictures of something that is only there for a moment, that can only be captured once.”

For as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by old, half-decayed, discarded, collapsed, peeling things. As a child, I took a lot home with me and often turned it into something 'new/usable' or cherished it as a valuable object. Since I got my first camera at the age of 12, I have taken a lot of photos. When I see previous photos, I notice that they were often not "family snapshots", but more often (parts of) animals, buildings, trees, beach and so on. In recent years I have been mainly concerned with abstract photography, in which reality changes to 'unrecognizable', with a lot of attention to line, color, texture and shape. I usually don't set out with a preconceived plan, chance often determines what I capture. I see potential in something, take a number of shots, then use software to adjust the photos, sometimes even to create a completely new image. I like to take pictures of something that is only there for a moment, that can only be captured once: water reflections or using a moving camera (ICM). Photographing through a partially transparent foreground (such as glass or plastic) also appeals to me, this creates worlds that appeal to my imagination. And of course my eye is always keen to discover beautiful images in old iron or chipped paint! When photographing, it is not about technically perfect photos, but about creating interesting images. Images that raise questions and surprise in the viewer. I like to let everyone use their own imagination and for this reason I do not use titles. I am self-taught and have taken several courses at Iris Depassé's Academy of Abstract Photography.

Helma van de Water:

'I want my work to evoke beauty with a sensory experience for the viewer'

Helma is a ceramist and has her studio in Smilde (Drenthe). Her fascination with working on the potter's wheel arose during the SBB Ceramics course in Gouda. The characteristic decoration arises from an intuitive line, surprisingly geometric and abstract, where self-composed colors partly determine the end result. Her inspiration comes from, among other things, De Stijl and Art Deco. She came 7th (out of 110 participants) in the Nationale Keramiekprijs 2023. The jury writes that with her work she represents the craft, real pottery and that she has mastered the tricks of the trade. 'This beautiful piece of craftsmanship shows the pleasure she experiences working with clay.' She is a member of the Stichting Keramisten Noord Nederland, the Drents Schildersgenootschap and the Kunst en Cultuur 4-daagse Midden-Drenthe.
