Gabi Vos Paints Memories

Cultureel Centrum Zuidhorn
15 March 2026 to 15 May 2026

About this activity.

Gabi Vos (Prague 1975) has a beautiful studio on the top floor of her home in Zuidhorn. Large oil paintings hang there, such as a sleeping man in a church, but also very small, delicate miniatures of a leaf or a single green bean. Furthermore, a small blue and pink Superman costume hangs on a hanger on one of the walls. Not for decoration, but as a subject for a future painting.

Gabi studied business economics in Prague, where she also did graphic design. She had a wonderful time in Prague, a romantic city also known as the City of a Thousand Towers, but then she met her Dutch husband and so, at the age of twenty-six, she came to our country. She continued working in the corporate world, but eventually realized that she was missing something. That realization became even stronger when she became increasingly aware of how quickly life stages follow one another and how fast her children grew up. She also wanted to do something with the memories of her native country. She felt an increasing need to capture it all. Of course, this can be done very simply with endless snapshots, but Gabi wanted to delve deeper and linger longer on *what* she was capturing. By then, she had moved from the city to a village, and nature also invited more reflection.

As a child, she had always enjoyed working with colored pencils and watercolors, so she decided to study at the Klassieke Academie in Groningen. There, she could learn to master a variety of techniques. She succeeded admirably, and in the year after her graduation, she was primarily focused on exploring what truly suited her best.

The next phase, which she is currently in, involves sharing her work with others. Currently, some of her work is on display at the Martiniplaza as part of the exhibition Ode aan het Stadspark ('Ode to the City Park'). One of her larger landscapes was even selected to appear on the banner advertising the exhibition. A theme as inspiration always makes her extra creative, because it challenges her to delve deeper into a subject in unexpected and original ways. For instance, around the theme 'The Future Through Rose-Tinted Glasses,' she created a large painting of windmills and one of a pink dress, among other works. To her, a painting is clearly more than just a decorative image.

Connection is also important to Gabi. Gabi is positive about the concept of an open studio route in Zuidhorn. Furthermore, in the context of connection, she would like to capture not only her own memories but also those of others, by exploring together why a memory is important and what that memory actually evokes. She can then create a compelling representation of this in oil paint or another medium.
