About DORR and his music:
John Dorr is a composer and performing musician born in the UK. He graduated in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in classical music. He currently lives in France.
From 2011 to 2019, Dorr was a member of the experimental post-rock band STEMS, which gained a reputation on the European club circuit for its melodic and cinematic sound that incorporated classical music.
One of STEMS’ projects was a live soundtrack for George Méliès’ silent film ‘A Trip to the Moon’.
After the group split up in 2019, Dorr continued on his own under the name DORR. DORR creates music that is related to but more experimental than STEMS’s.
EKHO was one of DORR’s storytelling projects: “an album and immersive concert based on Ovid’s Echo, with songs influenced by the parallels between the ancient myth and the modern world of digital communication.”
A more recent project is *Between The Lights*, the award-winning soundtrack for Michael Groom’s film of the same name.
Jan Willem Broek of *De Subjectivisten* writes about *Between The Lights*:
“Across 12 tracks, Dorr unleashes his idiosyncratic vision of film music, and he does so with verve. Of course, you can tell it’s suited to a film, but it also stands tall on its own without any visuals. It’s idiosyncratic post-rock with neoclassical, experimental and minimal music elements. It’s also lovely how he sometimes mixes angelic vocals into the mix. It sounds like a tranquil cross-pollination of Mogwai, Pascal Comelade and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. The absolute highlight is the eleventh track, “Gabriel’s Message (Foreboding)”, which runs for over 9 minutes, but the rest is also absolutely beautiful and builds up to it nicely, culminating in an explosion in the closing track that follows. It has turned out to be a varied and compelling masterpiece.”
