This exhibition is an invitation from the exhibitors to look beyond the physical layer of paint itself,
to that which is invisible in the work, yet palpable.
Hilde Barendse In Search of Layering
In my work, I am always looking for a double layer. The theme ‘Under the Skin’ therefore suits me well. In 2015, I entered the Summer Expo with the theme ‘Wild’.
During the preliminary round in Groningen, the jury immediately awarded my work ‘Tegenstroom’ a wildcard. This qualified me directly for the exhibition at the Gemeentemuseum The Hague.
This recognition has greatly stimulated my further development as an artist. During this exhibition, I am showing works using three types of techniques:
- Collage paintings
I bring this technique, in which strips of paper with varying images and texts form the basis, to life with oil paint.
- Thread works
I wrap the painted work with hundreds of threads of different colors. This technique also creates a layering effect, but also a very different image compared to the Collage paintings.
- Tile works Here, I combine various (scrap) materials into an organic image (paper, textiles, plaster)
Annemarie Blom Creating something out of nothing
Even as a child, I was inspired by all kinds of materials around me, which led me to experiment with clay later in life. I find ‘creating something out of nothing’ a fascinating and surprising process, which I experience as a kind of miracle of birth. During the production process, the colorful objects and figures take on a life of their own, their own personality, and inspire everyone's imagination. I draw inspiration from absolutely everywhere and incorporate this not only into making sculptures but also into creating paintings and jewelry. The entire work process is intensive, but at the same time gives me a lot of energy, satisfaction, and pleasure!
Bas Nijenhuis Close to the vulnerability or nakedness of life itself
I make paintings and portraits that express a spiritual state. Children, adults, or animals serve as an entry point, in order to get beneath the surface of existence. My works explore what it means to live, to ‘step into someone’s skin’ or to be close to the vulnerability or nakedness of life itself. In the ‘Blue Series’, the external blue projections (Delft and Oriental blue motifs) are a metaphor for the outside world, where parts of what lies beneath are visible. Other works go beyond the surface of what is perceived as masculine (Masculinity Redefined). All works are an invitation to look beyond the physical layer of paint itself. The depicted objects are usually not the subject. It is about that which is not there, that which has not been painted. It is that which is invisible, yet palpable. I create independent works based on the above theme, as well as commissioned portraits. Additionally, I teach at the Classical Academy in Groningen.
