Exhibition 'Ruimte Alom' by Irene van de Mheen

Bierumer School
12 November 2022 to 18 December 2022

About this activity.

Irene van de Mheen is a guest artist at the Bierumer School and will present her new work from November 12 to December 18.

Irene van de Mheen studied at the art academy in Kampen, after which she continued her studies at the Escola Massana in Barcelona. She lived in Barcelona for 16 years and did various artist residencies in India, New York and Rotterdam, among others. In New York she started working with all kinds of adhesive tape, which resulted in an architecture built up of colored lines, especially for the Miró museum in Mallorca, with which she won the Pilar Juncosa i sotheby's prize.

In her work, Irene explores the desire for space within the possibilities of drawing, playfully crossing the boundaries of the paper. Her work is emphatically visual: from form, color and material the drawings of spatial, silent constructions arise in which coincidence and imperfection play an important role. The format varies from intimate work on paper to monumental, site-specific installations in which the playful and intuitive character of the smaller drawings is preserved as much as possible.

For the Bierumer school she makes a large window and floor drawing of colored adhesive foil. A drawing that develops in the course of her work period in the Bierumer School and moves in space, as it were. She is fascinated by temporary interventions that transform a space, where architectural elements become part of the work.

The attic of the Bierumer School is actually a drawing in itself, the rhythm of the beam construction, the long wooden ladder to a rectangular roof hatch. The attic seems made for projections and the nostalgic sound of a slide device. By projecting compositions of lines and areas of color on the complex beam construction, the attic participates in the drawings and a new, imaginary space is created.

A working period in East Groningen is extra special for the artist because her mother was from Groningen. As a child she always stayed with her niece in Bedum in the summer and then I came back with a light Groningen accent. She also regularly visited my grandfather in Grijpskerk. The Groningen dialect sounds so familiar. Her mother started working as a nurse at an early age in Ermelo, where she lived for the rest of her life, and although she has never lived in Groningen, she still feels like a northerner.

Bierumer School offers artists space for production and presentation and is open to the public every weekend from 2 pm to 5 pm. Bierumer School, Hereweg 12, 9906 PE Bierum www.bierumerschool.nl.
