Exhibition Preview 'Baken Noordoost-Groningen'

Bierumer School
5 May 2023 to 27 May 2023

About this activity.

Northeast Groningen has been in the news in recent decades as one of the most plagued regions in the Netherlands. The consequences of gas extraction are well known and all kinds of other energy issues (data centres, wind energy, gas drilling at sea) also come together here. While the housing market has also picked up here, the region is also dealing with many damaged buildings that need to be repaired or demolished.

Baken Noordoost-Groningen will be an installation by artist Marjan Teeuwen. Since 2008 she has transformed demolition buildings into works of art in various places in the Netherlands and around the world under the name Destroyed House (Amsterdam, Leiden, Kyoto, the Gaza Strip, etc.). Her method is this: she makes a new, temporary interior. Visitors can then enter this completely changed space. It is a very special experience, comparable to entering a cave or a palace of mirrors; you don't know where to look. The entire installation is eventually demolished: the artwork that remains is a series of aesthetic photos that add a second layer to the work.

Hi-Lo; a new visual arts initiative in the Wadden area, would very much like to collaborate with this artist. The transformation of such a loaded heritage as a building affected by gas extraction into a temporary work of art fits perfectly in Hi-Lo's 'mind-expanding' theme. In consultation with various authorities, the first priority is now to find and 'hold' a building for the entire process of deconstruction and installation by artist Marjan Teeuwen. This requires careful consultation with the party that manages or will manage such a demolition building. The entire process from building to artwork takes about six months.

Baken Noordoost-Groningen is being developed together with the Bierumer School and will be completed sometime in 2024, partly depending on the availability of a building. In anticipation of this, the Bierumer School will show some of Marjan Teeuwen's impressive photographic works in May 2023, the documentaries Destroyed House Gaza and Destroyed House Op Noord will be screened about her way of working, and writer, speaker, art historian and curator Sacha Bronwasser will in conversation with her on Friday afternoon 26 May (from 3 till 4 p.m.) in the Bierumer School. Marjan Teeuwen has just returned from an orientation visit to Ukraine. Marjan Teeuwen's work can be seen from 5 to 27 May.

Bierumer School offers artists space for production and presentation and is open to the public every Friday and Saturday from 2 pm to 5 pm. Bierumer School, Hereweg 12, 9906 PE Bierum www.bierumerschool.nl.
