Exposition: Anke Flik, Ton Meijer en Henk van Veelen
About this activity.
A diverse exhibition featuring three passionate artists.
Anke Flik: Sometimes I'd like to fly, just get away from it all...
Anke Flik has spent her life searching for "empty time," time to laze around, fiddle, and daydream. Her work is inspired by everything that crosses her path and captures her attention. This can include unusual shapes and colors, but also fairy tales, nature, music, and literature. Much can serve as a source of inspiration and find its way into her bronze and stone sculptures, as well as her paintings. She herself says: "Sometimes I'd like to fly, just get away from it all..." For 25 years, she has been doing this through sculpting and, in recent years, painting as well. A few years ago, due to the closure of the Museum Technische Werken's bronze foundry, Anke started making small "bronzes" using the old "Cire perdue" or "lost wax" method. She calls these figurines "milk carton bronzes" (the "bronzes" are cast in milk cartons). Due to their limited size, she now creates smaller bronze works.
Ton Meijer (1940) A versatile artist
Ton Meijer uses many techniques in his visual work. He draws, paints in watercolors, and creates acrylic and oil paintings. His subjects have shifted over the years. After a long period of creating both watercolors and oil paintings of nature, he primarily began creating oil paintings as a response to what's happening in the world. The paintings in the red series represent this approach. With his watercolors, he has transitioned to more abstract work. The shapes and colors have become defining and express how he feels. This can lead to chaotic, cartoonish watercolors. The exhibition features both works from his early years and his latest watercolors. Ton Meijer is a multidisciplinary artist. He has been creating comics his entire life, but he is also a language artist, writer of cabaret texts, short stories, plays, and poems. Besides drawing comics, he created many cartoons and published them in newspapers.
In recent years, he has devoted himself to his long-standing love: filmmaking. He has created numerous artist portraits and short films.
Henk van Veelen: Depicting the ordinary as "unusual" fascinates me most.
Henk has lived in and around Groningen for over 50 years. His interest in painting came naturally to him. Alongside his psychology studies, he took evening classes at Minerva. Years later, at Noorderateliers, he refreshed the classical curriculum. By phasing out his work as a management consultant, he had more time, and painting has become more important. Henk continually experiments with styles, techniques, and subjects. He doesn't rely too heavily on routine, but seeks out the excitement and challenge of the new while painting. Henk paints based on observation, photographs, and imagination. His exploration of the interplay between line, form, and color is central to his work. A key characteristic of his work is the tension between figuration and abstraction, coupled with an expressive use of color.
