°° °° °° exhibition by Andrew Maximilian Niss

Raamgalerie De Prachtvink
1 April 2026 to 30 April 2026

About this activity.

From April 1 to 30, 2026, Andrew Maximilian Niss, an artist from Germany, is exhibiting a photograph with visual poetry under the somewhat enigmatic title °° °° °° at window gallery ‘De Prachtvink’ at the Vinkhuizen shopping center, Platinalaan 505a, 9743 GZ Groningen.

°° °° °° is a visual poem from 2025. The poem is printed on photo paper measuring 20 x 26.8 cm. The black-and-white photograph shows a strip, a facade of a house,  against a broad black background containing a clothesline from which 13 white items of clothing are hanging. In the background, two windows are open, from which bedding is hanging to get fresh air. Strictly speaking, it is a typical image for April, when the spring cleaning urge strikes. However, in the bottom right corner sits a human figure wearing a thick white coat with a towel over his head. The black-and-white image looks like something out of a science fiction film, where the human figure with the ‘hood’ could represent an astronaut in a spacesuit. Niss describes this visual poem as: poetry of an event that is thereby lifted into the boundless universe. In the upper right corner, a small window can be seen through which light shines, thus drawing attention. It turns out to be the interior of the building, thereby complementing the visual poem, which is a fine example of parallelismus membrorum. Niss distills the staccato rhythm of the fluttering laundry in his title into a series of dots or points, which perhaps invite the viewer to interpret them for themselves…

Visual poetry is an art form in which imagery and poetry come together. Its roots lie in graphic experiments, such as the prints and typewritten works of Hendrik Werkman. Visual poetry has become increasingly popular internationally since the 1960s..

Andrew Maximilian Niss, born in New York  City(United States), has lived in Gut Hanerau (Schleswig-Holstein), Germany, for quite some years. He works with visual poetry, photography, and words. His work has been published in magazines worldwide. He regularly participates in international group exhibitions and is now also exhibiting in Vinkhuizen.
