From 1 to 31 January 2023, Ryosuke Cohen will exhibit a silkscreen collage 'Braincell 1161' in window gallery 'De Prachtvink' at shopping center Vinkhuizen, Platinalaan 505a, 9743 GZ Groningen.
"Braincell 1161" is a mail art work by Ryosuke Cohen from September 2022. It is the 1161st installment of the longest running worldwide mail art work. Cohen assembles various mail art he receives from around the world into new screen prints, which in turn form the basis for new mail art. This 30cm (w) x 42cm (h) work is a pastiche of received postal art from the United States, Italy, Germany, Spain, Ukraine, France, Canada, Brazil, Lithuania, Slovakia, Singapore, Japan and the Netherlands. Together, the 49 contributions that range from depictions of Volkswagen beetles, women's faces, fish, typography, sheep and owls form a new organic whole that is sure to resonate from a distance and depict deeper layers. 'I sometimes devise logotypes and visual poetry, and when completed, I feel satisfied with it', says Cohen about his artwork .
Ryosuke Cohen (1948) is a mail art artist from Japan, Ashiya (Hyogo). He was a teacher of visual arts and in 1985 started his project 'Brain Cell', which has now been going on for 37 years. Every month he puts together a screen print from about 50 mail art mailings that he distributes around the world, including in the Groningen magazine CLADBLOCK. Cohen's other projects include 'Orion Soup' and since 2001 'Fractal Portrait Project'. Cohen's work is regularly exhibited around the world.
The window gallery is an exhibition space that can only be viewed from the outside, but 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The gallery is illuminated until 11 p.m.Every month a new work of art by an artist is exhibited.
