Willemijn Rog

Willemijn Rog uses different materials and techniques to create drawings, paintings and self-made puppets for experimental short films. To her, making art means ultimate freedom. She sees art as a language. Therefore, she considers herself a storyteller.
At a young age, she started as a cartoonist and learned to think in dialogues, characters, different worlds and the creator's position. She has been incorporating these experiences into her work ever since. There is not just one way to tell a story: it is about how you want to translate it. This creates space for creation.
Dreams, illusions and imagination are themes in her work, as is the grim, unforgiving world we live in today. The topics range from her personal life to social themes such as feminism, racism and discrimination.
She tries to push the boundaries of abstraction, alienating the everyday from the viewer. Her works can depict a macabre, distorted reality, but equally, they can be the result of visual journalism, in which she captures live drawing observations.
Willemijn graduated as a Teacher in Fine Arts & Design from Kunstacademie Minerva in Groningen in 2018. She received a nomination for the Klaas Dijkstra Academy Prize. She has participated several times in art projects in elderly care, refugee shelters, education and theatre. During her artist-in-residence in the asylum seekers' centre in Drachten, she worked on her first book 'Verre Oorden, Lange Vluchten' in cooperation with the foundation Stichting De Vrolijkheid.

Galerie Noord.
Galerie Noord is een expositieruimte in hartje Groningen. Vierwekelijks bieden we kunstenaars uit het Noorden de mogelijkheid recent werk te tonen, solo of in kleine groepen. Galerie Noord richt zich op autonoom, experimenteel en onderzoekend werk in vrijwel alle disciplines. We willen bezoekers verrassen door tentoonstellingen te bieden met een wisselend karakter.
Galerie Noord wordt volledig gerund door vrijwilligers. In 1997 werd de galerie opgericht als kunstenaarsinitiatief.
