About this activity.

An expression of anti-art became the most influential work of art of the 20th century. But who elevated the urinal to art? Speculations about female authorship come and go.

In 2004, a urinal was voted the most influential work ever in modern art. The famous provocateur/artist Marcel Duchamp claimed to have created Fountain – or rather, he had bought the mass-produced product and signed it – but according to some, the lesser-known, flamboyant Dada artist Baroness Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven can also lay claim to the much-discussed, elevated porcelain 'piss pot'.

Filmmaker Barbara Visser delved into the absurd history of the iconic work, of which it is uncertain whether the original still exists. The absurdity is reinforced by the fact that Visser regularly breaks into the film to chat with the designer, who, at her instructions, changes fonts or zooms in on photos on the spot.

Alreadymade is a search for the truth behind Fountain, a reflection on what makes art art and at the same time an attempt to bring Elsa von Freytag-Loringhoven to life. With the little archive material that exists of her, a German actress and modern technology, the interesting bohemian is brought out of the margins of art history.

On Sunday April 7, director Barbara Visser will be present for a discussion about her documentary.
