About this activity.

DE BEST VERZORGDE BOEKEN / The Best Dutch Book Designs 2021

The Best Dutch Book Designs are a phenomenon in the graphic arts sector, both at home and abroad. Every year a professional jury selects 33 books of the highest quality in the fields of design, lithography, printing, binding and publishing.

The annual inspection of The Best Dutch Book Designs is the oldest of its kind in Europe (1926). The versatility of Dutch design and book production is celebrated. An excellent book can only be created by combining the expertise, creativity and perseverance of publishers, designers, printers and binders. Budgetary and technical challenges are often the only limiting factors.

How does the jury make a selection? Is there one universal benchmark for all these works? Absolutely not! Every year, a fresh, independent jury looks at all the new nominees from the past twelve months and comes up with their own answer. An answer you can wholeheartedly agree or disagree with.

328 books were submitted for The Best Dutch Book Designs of 2021, significantly more than in 2020 (278). The jury met for the sixtieth time. Their selection includes a variety of books: technical masterpieces and conceptual thinkers, introverted and exuberant books, books by world-famous designers as well as by students and books published by publishers, institutes or in-house. The expert jury focused mainly on the refinement of design and content.

In addition to a professional jury, De Best Verzorgde Boeken has a student jury. Five design students from Dutch art academies and colleges made their own choice, which contains more daring and experimental publications. Those books can also be viewed here.

At the international judging of Schönste Bücher aus aller Welt in Leipzig, the Dutch selection was awarded the two highest prizes:

  • The Golden Letter, the main prize, went to On the Necessity of Gardening, published by Valiz i.c.w. Centraal Museum Utrecht (editor-in-chief: Laurie Cluitmans, design: Bart de Baets; production Wilco Art Books)
  • The Gold Medal went to Met Stoelen, designed, made and published by Kuan-Ting, Chen, a third-year student at ArtEZ Arnhem in 2021.
Extra activity Saturday 1 July: workshop Streetart Fanzine

On Saturday 1 July there will be an extra activity in Walter's Bookshop: you can make a street art fanzine together with Hugo and Tim from Stichting Kladmuur. In one afternoon, the participants make a Do-It-Yourself fanzine on the riso printer. The activity takes place in Walter's Bookshop (Oude Kijk in 't Jatstraat 10, Groningen), from 1-5 p.m.

GRID Grafisch Museum Groningen.
