Art dealer Peter ter Braak is organizing a sales exhibition of the work of Christiaan Kuitwaard.
In addition to a number of larger forest and seascapes, a large number of small, intimate night landscapes from the series ‘Nocturne / I see a darkness’ are also on display.
In these works, the night takes center stage, both in its serenity and in the artistic challenge of depicting darkness. In terms of content, the series deals with the threatening darkness approaching us in the form of climate change and the already initiated collapse of the ecosystem.
Exhibition curator Feico Hoekstra wrote about Christiaan’s work: ‘He transforms everyday reality into静止 images with universal expressive power. In his landscapes, forest and sea play the leading role. By omitting details and being restrained with color and brushstrokes, nothing imposes itself. The painting becomes a mental space in which the viewer can move freely.’ Christiaan (1965) served as a professional soldier in the Royal Netherlands Navy from 1981 to 1985. Subsequently, he studied at the art academies of Groningen and Kampen. His work is well represented in the collections of Museum Belvédère and the Fries Museum. Kuitwaard has played a prominent role in Frisian painting for many years and achieved national recognition when Joost Zwagerman selected several of his works for the exhibition *Silence out Loud* at Museum Kranenburg in Bergen (2015). Since then, his work has been shown on various national stages, including Museum De Fundatie in Zwolle and Museum MORE in Gorssel (solo exhibition 2019). In 2024, a series of plein-air paintings was shown during the solo exhibition ‘Sprekende bomen’ (with poet Jan Kleefstra) at Museum De Mesdag Collectie in The Hague.
From April 11 to September 13, the retrospective exhibition ‘Christiaan Kuitwaard – Stilteschilder’ is on view at Museum JAN (Amstelveen).
