Abroad - travel drawings by Rik Hagt

KPNST - Kunstprojecten Noorderstation
10 June 2023 to 28 June 2023

About this activity.

Rik Hagt shows a selection of his travel drawings titled 'Abroad' in KPNST - Kunstprojecten Noorderstation (Zuidoost) from 10 June to 28 June 2023.

'Abroad' is the third presentation in a trilogy of Hagt's drawings in Kunstprojecten Noorderstation. He previously presented 'Today I'd rather write' (2017) and 'Drawing Exhibition' (2020) there. The format is 15 x 21 cm, and drawn with colored pencil. This exhibition is in line with the comings and goings of commuters and travellers at Groningen Noord Station.

Visual artist Rik Hagt (1962), living in Groningen since 1983, has traveled and 'signified' a considerable part of Europe in his artist life. The title 'Abroad' for his selection of travel drawings is twofold. It not only refers to the location of most of the drawings, but also emphasizes that they were literally made outdoors. One time in all weathers, the other time under the burning sun. A number of works are the interiors of hotel rooms where he stayed. Rik Hagt makes these drawings as inspiration or preliminary study for his 'perpetual' series of paintings 'Hotel Room' (since 1991). The generally furnished bedrooms look similar -are however different and temporarily function as your home - and form a common thread in this exhibition.

The travel drawings have been carefully installed 'like a cloud' that follows the stairs of the former stairway to platform 1. By walking up and viewing the works per step, you always get a new sight at eyelevel, making the viewing a more active experience: zooming in on details in Hagt's travel destinations in alternation with zooming out on the whole.

What you see is Rik Hagt's field of vision and what he decides to capture in colored pencil on paper. His direct, sketchy drawing style allows you to experience what he wants to remember in an accessible way. More than a snapshot with a chosen frame where everything is captured within the edges, Hagt also validates his environment through the time spent drawing. In this perspective, drawing is a more intense predecessor of filter applications on your holiday photos for your social media account.

Hagt also draws from his own oeuvre and regroups it with new works, like a time agent of his artist's life. If you keep track of Rik Hagt's exhibitions, you will get to see his interests and life in a more distilled way. As an outsider you can, as it were, crawl inside his head and travel with him.

KPNST – Kunstprojecten Noorderstation is a project space for art. This exhibition has been realized as a run-up to the regular programming of a refurbished Kunstprojecten Noorderstation. 'Abroad' can be seen from the outside as an installation. Those who would like to see the exhibition up close in the presence of the artist are welcome on three Saturday afternoons: June 10, June 17 and June 24 from 2-5 pm, and the finissage on Wednesday evening June 28 from 7-9 pm.
