‘Between Vulnerability and Strength’ – exhibition at K38

Kunstencentrum K38
14 March 2026 to 4 April 2026

About this activity.

The exhibition ‘Between Vulnerability and Strength’ at Kunstencentrum K38 can be visited until Saturday, April 4.

For Marieke van Leeuwen, the theme ‘The world is strange’ is central. Through her ceramics, she approaches the world as a storyteller, combining humor with a sense of melancholy.

Mascha de Lange’s work explores the complex relationship between humans, animals, and nature. Her series ‘A New Beginning’ originated from the practice of bird taxidermy. The sculptures function as universal symbols of transformation and evolution.

Renée Otter creates sculptures in stone, clay, bronze, cement, and resin. Her work is an ambitious exploration of ways to express human emotions through both figurative and abstract forms.

Silversmith Hennie Broers is known for her handmade silver jewelry and objects, often inspired by nature and combined with organic materials such as bones and quills of African porcupines.

Gwendolyn Van Essen presents blooming bulbs and winter roses as symbols of transformation. Their fragile forms seem to carry a quiet strength. Translucent petals, bending stems, and roots that anchor themselves in the earth while remaining resilient. Her work reflects on change as an inner process—on growth, loss, and renewal.

In the oeuvre of Gert Jan Slotboom (Wageningen, 1957), the human figure does not appear as a character in a narrative, but as condensed vulnerability. The core of his work is formed by the ongoing series ‘Ecce Homo, the vulnerable human’. In this series, Slotboom presents the human stripped of all contextual elements. The bodies are large, direct, at times abrasive. The restrained use of color and raw paint handling create a strong physical intensity. Their vulnerability is not an accusation, but an acknowledgment.

Edzer Dillema’s abstract works are open to multiple interpretations and invite the viewer to engage personally. Light plays an important role in his compositions, where refined linear structures create layers and depth.

On March 28, Marieke van Leeuwen will be present at K38; on March 29, Mascha de Lange; on April 3, Renée Otter; and on April 4, Hennie Broers.

Upstairs in the Youth Gallery, works by group 4 students from De Hekakker primary school in Norg are on display. In the Art Shop, paintings by Hinke Buitenga can be viewed.
