Messages from the Underworld

About this activity.

In January there will be the farewell exhibition Messages from the Underworld by Manja Kindt and Jan Pieter van den Bos. Their art newspaper Hidden Times has existed for 25 years and a special edition will be published for this occasion.

After six years, Manja Kindt and Jan Pieter van den Bos stop working for the Bierumer School because they want to spend more time on their own art practice.

Kindt's work has a strong autonomous character. There is a world of her own that she does report to the viewer with the aid of photography, video and text and introduces it, as it were, but at the same time leaves much, if not everything, to the persuasive power of her visual work. As a result, her work, which differs in technique, consciously steers in a certain direction that she herself desires, but, as said, also leaves a lot to the viewer's own imagination. There is no non-committal reciprocity. A certain story, a myth, is always the starting point, the works of art are not just illustrations, but raise the theme to a higher level, allowing you as a viewer to enter this world of the artist. You may even become part of it if you try hard.

Jan Pieter van den Bos calls himself a wanderer with his own long-term planning as his only permanent residence. For forty years now, he has been drawing a tight track in his life with this planning, which he calls his 'research': exploration of age-old lines of thought with varying angles and viewpoints, translated using different techniques and divided into five parts.

Together they present Messages from the Underworld in the Bierumer School. Jan Pieter presents several five-metre-long scrolls, written and drawn contemplative studies from the underworld (Lethe passion). Manja, is making an installation based on the film Messages from the Underworld.
