Aram Pourjafar - 'Faces of Freedom'

Kunstpunt Groningen
6 April 2023 to 22 April 2023

About this activity.

In the Faces of Freedom exhibition, artist Aram Pourjafar shows a series of portraits of Iranian (mainly) younger people, who have died in recent months when they demonstrated in Iran for more freedom and equal rights.

The starting point of these protests was the death of Mahsi Amini, on September 20, 2022. The Iranian vice police had determined that she had not worn her headscarf correctly, something that ultimately cost her her death.

Since then there have been regular large demonstrations in Iran, which are usually crushed hard. Pourjafar: “In recent months I have been very concerned about my compatriots. I felt powerless; seeing how brutally the demonstrators are treated hurt me. It would be even worse if they were forgotten.” With Faces of Freedom, Aram wants to pay her respect to these victims: “The series consists of portraits of (mainly) younger people who died on their way to freedom. I painted these portraits on unstretched canvases to emphasize the purity and vulnerability of these brave people.”

About Aram Pourjafar
At the end of 2000, the then 18-year-old Aram fled Iran with her family. In 2004 she was admitted to Academy Minerva, where she studied autonomous visual arts. During her studies, she frequently focused on the themes of refugees and identity. Currently, Aram is not only an artist, but also a teacher.

'Faces of Freedom' can be seen until 24 April in the Kunstuitleen at Kunstpunt Groningen.
