With APPROP., ax710 and Jurjen Galema present a collaborative exhibition centred around appropriation — the act of taking ownership of, reusing, and giving new meaning to existing images, forms, and ideas. The title is a shortened form of appropriation. It refers to an artistic practice in which existing material is not simply adopted, but relocated, reworked, and given new meaning within a different context.
APPROP. builds on ax710’s long-term research into appropriation as an artistic and critical strategy. Existing cultural images, objects, and references are used to raise questions about ownership, identity, and representation, and about how meanings change over time and across contexts. For ax710, appropriation also explicitly concerns the relationship between different layers of time. Events, images, and ideas from the past continue to resonate in the present, while we always view the past through the perspective of our own time. Our present-day perspective therefore shapes how we interpret the past, while the past simultaneously continues to influence how we understand the present. In APPROP., these different layers and perspectives of time intersect and become intertwined. From his own practice, Jurjen Galema adds an exploration of identity, gender, and culture, and of how these concepts become visible through images, objects, and cultural references.
The exhibition builds on their collaboration for Pride Groningen, where Jurjen created the Gondola of Wrath, a float for the Pride parade, and developed it into a joint performance with ax710. This collaboration forms part of their broader research into identity, gender, culture, and acceptance.
APPROP. brings together existing and new works, references, and materials in an exhibition that creates connections between different cultural and visual contexts. By placing elements from these contexts alongside one another, a layered presentation emerges that invites visitors to reflect on what we make our own, who determines what something means, and how identity is continually shaped and reshaped.
The dot at the end of APPROP. functions both as an interruption and an opening: the concept is not brought to a close, but continues as an ongoing process of critical inquiry, reflection, and change.
