In the series of duo exhibitions 'Guests', Henk Kraayenzank receives the versatile artist Els ter Horst in his studio.
Ter Horst lives and works in Amsterdam and was educated at the Minerva Academy in Groningen. Initially with the intention of becoming an illustrator, but she didn't because the drawing was usually there before the story.
"I finished my training at the academy in the 'Theatre, movement and environment' department. That was a comprehensive department for anyone who was not a painter, graphic artist or sculptor. What am I then? A draftsman I can say, but afterwards I am happy with that broad description. I feel at home in it."
After the academy she designed, among other things, sets and carried out monumental commissions. Now she mainly focuses on drawing, painting, 3-dimensional work and makes artist's books.
"Sometimes an image in my head is very clear and every now and then I manage to materialize it exactly that way. And sometimes a performance arises hesitantly, while drawing. These become question marks and glimpses. The work is about us, about people and about our behaviour. That is not always figurative and visible, sometimes the work is even seemingly lifeless and abstract. Then it is about proportions or the decor in which we live”.
The work is multifaceted. Both in terms of techniques and subjects. It is narrative, associative, conceptual and reflective. "I am a spectator, not a participant". Dimensions seem to intertwine, just like the techniques: Els draws and paints, cuts figures from linoleum and sticks them in the painted environment with a surprisingly contrasting effect. Without any emphasis, she creates an atmosphere that draws the viewer along and leaves them puzzled. Her figures usually move with infectious pleasure, jumping and dancing or bravely stepping on:
"Theatre: yes there is a lot of theater in our lives, movement: yes I am always on the go and our social environment has a lot of influence on my work".
