Now on display at the Tschumi Pavilion: ‘Refracted Perspectives’ by Andrea Dröes
About this activity.
This autumn and winter, the Tschumi Pavilion is bathed in the blue, shifting light of Refracted Perspectives, an art project created by Andrea Dröes specifically for the glass pavilion on Hereplein. For this work, she drew inspiration from the refraction of light, blueprints on glass and the play of light in the city.
Interaction with passers-by
Using blueprints, Dröes investigated how light is refracted through prisms. These blueprints then formed the basis of the work, in which light refraction, reflection and layering are recurring themes. Dröes: “I wanted to utilise the transparent and translucent nature of the pavilion to create an ever-changing interplay of vistas: an abstract universe in which light, space and perspective converge.” In interaction with the movement of passers-by, new compositions and perspectives are constantly emerging. The play of light, the refraction of light and the constant shift in perspective form the core of the work.
🗓️ ‘Refracted Perspectives’ can be admired day and night on Hereplein in Groningen until 14 February 2027.
About Andrea Dröes
Andrea Dröes (Amsterdam, 1985) is a visual artist working at the intersection of light, video, sound and space. She graduated as a theatre designer from the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU) and completed a two-year coaching programme at the Institute for Lighting Design (iLo).
Adopting an exploratory approach, she creates light artworks, audiovisual installations and video mapping in which she explores how light and image can alter the experience of space. Her work is created both independently and in collaboration with musicians, festivals, cultural institutions and other artists.
In recent years, her work has been exhibited at the Van Gogh Museum (as part of David Hockney’s exhibition The Arrival of Spring (2019)), during Into the Great Wide Open on Vlieland (2016 and 2023) and as part of Starring Stravinsky by Orkest Phion (2026).
In 2024–2025, she conducted research into the artistic and spatial possibilities of cyanotype, focusing on the interplay between light, colour, contrast and space. The knowledge she gained formed an important starting point for her art project in the Tschumi Pavilion.
The Tschumi Pavilion
The Tschumi Pavilion, or ‘Glass Video Gallery’, on Hereplein in Groningen was designed by the Franco-Swiss architect Bernard Tschumi. It was built in 1990 as part of the ‘What a Wonderful World’ event. Since 1995, various temporary multimedia projects by artists from the Netherlands and abroad have been exhibited there annually. Thanks to the pavilion’s design, all projects are clearly visible to anyone passing by or waiting for the bus. Since December 2021, the Tschumi Pavilion has been programmed by Kunstpunt Groningen.
