1 November 2026 to 30 November 2026

About this activity.

From November 1 to November 30, 2026, Japanese mail art artist Tetsuya Fukui will exhibit a mail art piece titled ‘Replicant’s Dream, 2019’ at the ‘De Prachtvink’ window gallery, located at the Vinkhuizen shopping center, Platinalaan 505a, 9743 GZ Groningen.

‘Replicant’s Dream, 2019’ is a mail art piece created in 2018, executed on a 10 x 14.8 cm piece of cardboard. The work features a square (10 x 10 cm) portrait of a young woman, printed in two colors, yellow and magenta, with the artist’s signature inscribed below in blue ink, thereby incorporating all three primary colors. The title, ‘Replicant’s Dream,’ alludes to the iconic 1982 film ‘Blade Runner,’ which is set in a 2019 version of Los Angeles. In the film, the Californian city is a bleak, decaying place, plagued by filth and overpopulation, and threatened by human-like robots known as ‘replicants.’ The film itself is based on the 1968 science fiction novel ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’ by Philip K. Dick. Since the term ‘android’ was already well-established by 1982, director Ridley Scott opted to use the new term ‘replicant’ instead. Fukui created this printed piece in 2018, on the eve of 2019, the year depicted as a dystopia according to the Blade Runner movie. The world, however, got a taste of a real-life dystopia a year later, in 2020, when the coronavirus crisis erupted. Things haven’t become much calmer since then. Beyond the fact that we have been carrying ‘Android’ phones in our pockets for years, a new cyber-revolution began in 2022 with the arrival of AI. The dream of the replicant is more relevant than ever…, or has the replicant perhaps already awakened?

Tetsuya Fukui is a visual artist, writer, and musician from Japan. In 1981, he founded the record label Kakusei Kobo. During the 1980s, Fukui produced graphic designs and articles for various magazines, including ‘Fool’s Mate’, ‘Change 2000’, and ‘Munion’. Later, he turned his focus toward creating music videos and visual poetry. In 2015, in collaboration with Tako Masaru, he created a virtual, perpetual exhibition at the Dorado Museum, a video available on YouTube titled ‘Tetsuya Fukui Exhibition in Second Life 2015’. To date, that exhibition has drawn 61 visitors.

The ‘window gallery’ is an exhibition space that can only be viewed from the outside, but it is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The gallery remains illuminated until 11:00 PM.Each month, a new work by a different artist is exhibited.
