Pilgrimage in the City
About this activity.
A contemporary art route past historic churches in Groningen.
The artist collective 6kmperuur10mdiep invites you to a unique summer experience
From July 10 through August 8, (thursday -saturday 11-16 h), you can embark on a journey as a contemporary pilgrim, visiting ancient sites of silence, beauty, and imagination. The art route “Pilgrimage in the City” takes you past three remarkable churches: the Akerk, the Nieuwe Kerk, and the Pelstergasthuiskerk.
At these locations, thirteen artists—affiliated with and invited by the artists’ collective 6kmperuur10mdiep—will present works created specifically for Pilgrimage in the City.
The artists explore the centuries-old concept of pilgrimage from a contemporary perspective. Whereas in the past, physical journeys to holy sites were central, pilgrimage today is also about inner exploration, slowing down, encounter, and finding meaning. They translate these themes into contemporary visual art and show what moves them, the paths they take in their artistic practice, and how they relate to themes such as searching, encountering, stillness, and imagination.
For Pilgrimage in the City, the churches are transformed into temporary studios and exhibition spaces. With a route booklet and the opportunity to collect a unique stamp at each location—inspired by 16th-century pilgrim souvenirs—the artists invite visitors to experience art as a pilgrimage.
The route is more than just a walk. At the various locations, you can engage in conversation with the artists and discover new perspectives. In the churches, you’ll find artworks created specifically for these spaces and artists working on-site.
