In the AANWAS series, Galerie Noord annually presents work by recently graduated artists from Minerva Art Academy and the Frank Mohr Institute. This edition, Commedia alla Maschera, revolves around masks, characters, mimicry and imagination. Through painting, symbols, bodies and storytelling, the artists explore how identity is performed and how the boundary between self and other can begin to blur.
Povilas Būda (Minerva Art Academy, 2025) paints small fictional and personal stories in which masked characters appear as actors. The balaclava conceals the face and shifts attention towards body language, posture and surroundings.
In Sexual Mimicry, Uxia Gonzalez Fernandez (Frank Mohr Institute, 2025) explores desire, imitation and ecology. The Ophrys orchid, which imitates a female bee in order to be pollinated, becomes an image of loss, memory and a wounded planet.
Xiaoyun Gao (Frank Mohr Institute, 2025) explores alternative ways of knowing and perceiving. Through painting, symbols, masks and theatrical spaces, she gives shape to invisible forms of existence and imagined worlds.
Galerie Noord.
Galerie Noord is een expositieruimte in hartje Groningen. Vierwekelijks bieden we kunstenaars uit het Noorden de mogelijkheid recent werk te tonen, solo of in kleine groepen. Galerie Noord richt zich op autonoom, experimenteel en onderzoekend werk in vrijwel alle disciplines. We willen bezoekers verrassen door tentoonstellingen te bieden met een wisselend karakter.
Galerie Noord wordt volledig gerund door vrijwilligers. In 1997 werd de galerie opgericht als kunstenaarsinitiatief.
