Nelleke has worked as a special education teacher. She has experience with refugee issues and problems that children carry with them. Her motivation to address social injustice stems from this. In her paintings, this subject is often visible.
Her work can be placed between an impressionistic and expressionistic style, where emotion and subjective experience take precedence over exact reality. Reality is sometimes distorted, and symbolic forms are added to reinforce feelings. Especially colors, thick layers of paint, and strong lines in various works form an expression of the deep unconscious.
She is a fan of Dali, Picasso and Gustav Klimt. The dreams and symbolism in their work are a great inspiration for Nelleke. Her work is also about dreams: the subconscious and the deep human experience of unity. She places the daily, often incomprehensible and bizarre situations, including war and violence against women, into a broader perspective of unity and balance in the Cosmos. The unity in the cosmos that can be found as part of ourselves.
You can also see that the romantic style appeals to her, to make reality more beautiful. Her painting can be understood from feeling, passion, melancholy, and the power of nature. And the experience of the greater whole, which is religious and sacred to her. She often feels insignificant in the face of the supernatural and worldly nature. She experiences the journey of the soul that goes through different layers of Being.
