Beer
About this activity.
Did you know that the first inhabitants of the terps were already drinking beer 2,500 years ago? And that the saying “beer after wine makes you feel fine, wine after beer makes you feel queer” actually has nothing to do with headaches?
Discover this and more at the BIER exhibition at Museum Wierdenland. An exhibition featuring unique beer-related objects, archaeological finds, art, and entertainment. Naturally, there is special attention to the history of beer in Groningen: from pap beer to kluin beer, and from Brouwerij Barbarossa to Baxbier. Step back in time in our old-fashioned pub, “Café Wierdengeluk,” where you can put on a record or play a game of billiards.
For the first time, the exceptionally large beer tap (dating from around 1600) in the shape of a mermaid is on display. This remarkable archaeological find was recently excavated at the site of the former Onstaborg in Sauwerd. It may well have been used to tap beer from a wooden barrel of Groningen brew. Come and see the paintings of Groningen-born artist Bernard Leemker as well. He is known for his cheerful café interiors. Posters of his work hang in cafés and billiard halls around the world, but at Museum Wierdenland you can now see the original paintings.
Baxbier has specially brewed a terps beer for the occasion using emmer wheat, barley, and elder. These crops were already growing around Ezinge in 500 BC.
