​​In Miscellaneous, Sytse van der Zee brings together several distinct series: drawings, collages, assemblages and a book project. The title refers to the varied character of the work, a collection of images that each originated from a particular fascination or discovery.

Curiosity forms the starting point. Old photographs, maps, discarded paintings, observations and experiences can all trigger a new series. Many images arise from afterimages of things he has seen, mixed with imagination. Their meaning remains open, somewhere between the maker’s point of departure and the viewer’s interpretation.

The exhibition also includes the book project Parade for a Spanish Princess. It began while listening to Pavane pour une infante défunte by Maurice Ravel, whose title Van der Zee, somewhat clumsily, translated as Parade for a Spanish Princess. Without script or preliminary sketches, he drew the story page by page.

Sytse van der Zee is a visual artist with a studio in the centre of Groningen. He worked as an illustrator and was a teacher and head of department at ArtEZ in Zwolle. Stories and imagination play an important role in his work.

Galerie Noord.

Galerie Noord is een expositieruimte in hartje Groningen. Vierwekelijks bieden we kunstenaars uit het Noorden de mogelijkheid recent werk te tonen, solo of in kleine groepen. Galerie Noord richt zich op autonoom, experimenteel en onderzoekend werk in vrijwel alle disciplines. We willen bezoekers verrassen door tentoonstellingen te bieden met een wisselend karakter. 
 
Galerie Noord wordt volledig gerund door vrijwilligers. In 1997 werd de galerie opgericht als kunstenaarsinitiatief.
