Construct / De Construct
About this activity.
August Robin Peters (Zevenaar, 1970) is known for his collage-like approach to art.
He incorporates fragments of leftover materials in a light and playful manner into compositions that balance abstraction and figuration. His investigative approach to materials and methods often yields surprising results. The composition is never predetermined; rather, Peters allows for chance, doubt, and discovery. With a sharp and trained eye, the image is gradually guided and adjusted until a new balance emerges.
For the presentation at the Portiersloge, the triptych Morning in Dorsoduro forms the starting point. This triptych is accompanied by new objects in the background, and together they comprise the Construct/De-Construct installation.
The cityscape Morning in Dorsoduro originated from a photograph I took during a visit to Venice. In the work, a memory unfolds, built from fragments. The photograph has been completely deconstructed, like a puzzle, and pulled apart. Through the composition of puzzle pieces, leftover materials and paint, the façades, windows and rooftops do not appear as a single, unified image. Instead, the work creates a play of omission and emphasis, showing what is visible or once was.
I selected and enlarged fragments from the triptych that detached them from their original context, allowing them to become independent forms. In this way, an installation emerges that offers a different, enriched perspective on the memory of Venice. In Construct/De-Construct, viewers are invited to look, discover and wander between recognition and imagination.
