‘MT opera unica’ by Carla Cantore

Raamgalerie De Prachtvink
1 March 2026 to 31 March 2026

About this activity.

From March 1st to 31st, 2026, Italian artist Carla Cantore will exhibit a unique artist's book, ‘MT opera unica’, at the  Window Gallery De Prachtvink near the Vinkhuizen shopping center, Platinalaan 505a, 9743 GZ Groningen.

MT opera unica is an artist's book from 2026. The 24 x 17 x 1.5 cm book is constructed of paper, ink, and jute.

The work centers on the southern Italian city of Matera, the artist's birthplace. As befits a book, the work has multiple layers and meanings. It aims to be an archive for collective memory. Each element of the book explores relationships in space and history.

The jute is reminiscent of the sacks in which the grain grown around the city was transported. The white in the book represents flour, the basic ingredient for bread, which in Matera still retains its original shape as it did centuries ago. White is also the color of tuff, the material from which the famous cave dwellings in the Sassi district were built. House and bread are universal archetypes. They are fundamental to our existence: shelter and nourishment. The house is a place of protection and reconciliation, bread an element that holds both physical and spiritual value in many cultures.

White can also be seen as a field of possibilities. White in a book invites you to record your own history and write your own destiny. The white paper is the place where "literal" inspiration is translated into concrete form. Cantore chose the photograph of the Matera skyline to make tangible the relationship between material, time, and identity.

Carla Cantore (born 1972) is a multidisciplinary artist with roots in photography. But her palette is much richer: video, installations, mail art, and artist's books. She has a predilection for used materials, choosing them for their historical and symbolic layers, which allow for the creation of something new. Besides being an artist, she lectures in the master's program in neuroaesthetics at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. Her work has been exhibited worldwide, including in Buenos Aires, Monaco, Plovdiv, Rome, Bari, Milan, Turin, Matera and now also in Groningue.
