Donald van Tol: “In the poem "When I Am Among the Trees," Mary Oliver describes how the presence of trees calms her. The Japanese are also convinced of this. For example, Dr. Qing-Li regularly sends stressed-out Tokyoites into the forest for a dose of shinrin-yoku: the forest as a soothing immersion bath, where the hectic pace of the city is replaced by the slow time of oaks and chestnuts. The Dutch government has also recognized the importance of forest bathing. Last December, the RIVM (National Institute for Public Health and the Environment) recommended that a tree should be visible from every house in the Netherlands.
The exhibition "Among the Trees - From Beijum to Maremma" showcases a variety of photographic tree images I took during walks in both the Italian region of Maremma and in Groningen's greenest urban district, Beijum. Traditional photographs, in both color and black and white, alternate with impressionistic images captured in-camera using multiple exposure techniques.”
